Zine Workshops

Join U4IA for a four-week zine-making program at 11th Avenue Community Space, Palm Beach. Working alongside four local creatives, participants will explore the complete independent publishing process—from developing an initial concept and creative direction to designing pages, preparing artwork for print, and assembling a finished publication. By the end of the program, each participant will have created and published their own original zine while gaining practical skills in storytelling, visual communication, layout design, printing and creative thinking. Open to all ages and experience levels, with all essential materials provided. Book the complete four-week program or attend individual workshops.

Each week focuses on a different stage:

  • 2 September: Curating & Concept Development with Fraser Dermek

  • 9 September: Design & Content Creation with Kat Queenan

  • 16 September: Print Preparation with Tiarna Lee

  • 23 September: Publishing & Assembly with Mari Naknut

By the end of the program, participants will have created and published their own original zine while learning practical skills in design, storytelling, printing and independent publishing.

All other essential workshop materials will be provided. Participants are also welcome to bring their own artwork, photographs, writing or creative ideas.

Workshop One: Curating & Concept Development

Begin developing the concept and creative direction for your own original zine.

Hosted by Fraser Dermek, this workshop introduces participants to zines and independent publishing. Through creative prompts, brainstorming, mood boards and page planning, participants will learn how to turn an initial idea into a clear publication concept.

Participants will leave with a zine concept, mood board, content list, page plan and creative direction.

Workshop Two: Design & Content Creation
$35.00

Create the artwork, content and page layouts for your own original zine.

Hosted by Kat Queenan, this hands-on workshop explores layout design, composition, typography, illustration, collage, photography, hand lettering and visual storytelling. Participants will experiment with different creative techniques while beginning to build the visual identity of their publication.

Participants will leave with a front-cover concept, original artwork, interior page designs and draft layouts.

Workshop Three: Print Preparation
$35.00

Prepare your artwork and page layouts for printing.

Hosted by Tiarna Lee, this workshop introduces participants to the practical process of producing an independent publication. Participants will learn how to scan artwork, organise their pages, prepare files, create folding layouts and produce test prints.

The session will also cover editing and refining each publication before the final print run.

Participants will leave with print-ready artwork, test prints, a confirmed page order and a refined publication.

Workshop Four: Publishing & Assembly
$35.00

Print, assemble and present your finished original zine.

Hosted by Mari Naknut, the final workshop covers printing, folding, staple binding, quality control and presentation. Participants will bring their completed pages together, produce multiple copies and share their finished publications with the group.

Participants will leave with a completed zine, multiple printed copies and practical experience in assembling and publishing their own work.
