The Zine Room

There’s something special about turning an idea into a physical publication. Photographs, drawings, stories and conversations come together on paper, creating something people can keep, share and return to.

The Zine Room celebrates that spirit, showcasing the diversity of local zine production across the Gold Coast and surrounding areas. The cabinet display will feature publications from private collections, including Breakbone, U4IA, Konnect, Fang It, Frocket, Gold Tooth, Bad News, The Resistance and others.

Join us on Saturday 24 October, from 1–5pm at 11th Avenue Community Space in Palm Beach. Entry is free, and everyone is welcome.

Independent Ideas, Shared on Paper

Zines give people the freedom to publish on their own terms. They can be photocopied booklets, carefully designed magazines or a few folded pages filled with ideas. Their content can span photography, illustration, music, poetry, interviews and personal reflections.

That freedom makes space for different voices and perspectives. A publication might document a group of friends, introduce an emerging artist or capture a creative scene as it unfolds. Each one carries something of the people and places behind it.

The Zine Room brings a range of these publications together, offering a glimpse into the creativity happening throughout our region.

A Record of Our Community

Independent publications often become records of local life. An interview captures someone at a particular stage of their creative journey. A photograph preserves a moment, a venue or a friendship. Years later, those pages can help us remember how a community looked, felt and expressed itself.

The private collections featured in this exhibition help keep those stories available. Publications continue to have a life after they leave their makers’ hands, finding their way onto bookshelves, into conversations and eventually to new readers.

Behind every edition is also a considerable amount of work. Creating, collecting, editing, designing and printing all take time. Collaborative publications bring together people with different skills, each contributing to something they believe deserves to exist.

At U4IA, we know how much those contributions matter. Our magazine exists through the creativity, stories, skills and time shared by our community. We’re stoked to see it included alongside other independent publications and to celebrate the people bringing local ideas into print.

Come and Get Inspired

Whether you’re interested in art, photography, writing, design or simply discovering something local, The Zine Room is an opportunity to explore independent publishing and appreciate the work behind the pages.

If you’ve been thinking about making your own zine, it might also offer a little encouragement. A few photographs, a collection of drawings or a story you want to tell can be enough to get started.

Come down, spend some time with the display and discover what our creative community is putting onto paper.
